The Croatian community from across Southern Ontario came together in extraordinary numbers on November 30, 2025, as some 2,000 visitors attended the grounds of the Croatian Sports and Community Centre of Hamilton throughout the afternoon for what has become the largest known Croatian Christmas Market outside of Europe.
The 5th Annual Croatian Christmas Market and Candy Cane Hunt, sponsored by the Canadian-Croatian Chamber of Commerce and co-hosted alongside the Consulate General of the Republic of Croatia in Mississauga and the Croatian Sports and Community Centre of Hamilton, once again welcomed families, friends and members of the Croatian-Canadian community for a vibrant afternoon filled with Croatian traditions, culture and festive cheer.
Inspired by “Advent Zagreb” – internationally recognized as one of Europe’s most enchanting and award-winning Christmas markets – organizers aimed to recreate elements of that magical atmosphere and it’s feeling of joy and togetherness that enchants visitors year after year.
From the sound of live Croatian Christmas music and caroling to the scent of fritule (Croatian fritters) and mulled wine that filled the air, the market offered visitors a taste of Croatia’s winter traditions right in the heart of Stoney Creek. Delicious food and beverages served at the event, including classic Croatian specialties, kept guests warm and satisfied on an otherwise chilly and windy day.
The bustling market featured 45 local artisans and businesses, showcasing their handcrafted goods, festive decor and treats, holiday gifts, and other cultural and culinary products, highlighting both local creativity and talent and Croatian pride.
Children were especially delighted by a surprise appearance from Sveti Nikola (St. Nicholas), who greeted the youngest attendees, handing out authentic Croatian treats and spreading Christmas spirit.
Organizers expressed gratitude and excitement over the record turnout:

By capturing the spirit of Advent Zagreb, we hoped to create a magical experience that connects us to our roots while celebrating together here in Canada. We were thrilled to welcome some 2,000 visitors for an afternoon of joy and togetherness to kick-off the time of Advent in preparation for Christmas.”
With record attendance and overwhelmingly positive feedback, the Croatian Christmas Market has become a signature annual tradition, strengthening community bonds, and proudly showcasing Croatian heritage to younger generations while sharing it with fellow Canadians.
