Over 700 participants attended the 9th Annual Croatian Heritage Night (Day) on October 10 as Toronto FC took on CF Montréal. It was wonderful to see so many Croatian-Canadians, families, friends and soccer fans come together to celebrate Croatian heritage and share in the excitement of the game.
This year’s celebration was especially meaningful as it marked the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Toronto Metros-Croatia NASL championship victory. The Toronto Metros-Croatia era is an important chapter in the community’s history, reflecting the lasting contributions of Croatian-Canadians to Canadian soccer history.
Those in attendance welcomed several Toronto Metros-Croatia alumni including Slavko Paric (Managing Director), George Simcich (General Manager) and former players Bob Iarusci, Carmine Marcantonio and Paul D’Agostino, which added to the significance of the occasion. The championship trophy was also on display allowing some to recall and others to further connect to past glory.
Celebrating this milestone alongside today’s younger generations of players and supporters was a wonderful reminder of the importance of our history and how it continues to connect us.
The pre-party at the Budweiser King Club featured entertainment by DJ Škara, commemorative Toronto Metros-Croatia Heritage Day T-shirts, a raffle and a lively atmosphere leading up to kickoff.
One of the highlights of the day was seeing nearly 80 Croatian-Canadian children take part in Toronto FC player experiences. For these young fans, the opportunity to be part of the match day experience was truly memorable. Moments like these help inspire the next generation and create lasting memories for children and their families.
Another highlight was Toronto Metros-Croatia being honoured on the pitch prior to kick-off, with Slavko Paric taking part in the ceremonial coin toss.
Toronto FC did not disappoint on the field, delivering a thrilling victory (2-1) with two last-minute goals in extra time, giving supporters at BMO Field lots to celebrate.
Following the game, fans who braved the chilly conditions were rewarded with a wonderful, close-up and personal opportunity to meet Toronto FC defender Benjamín Kuscevic. Benjamín was humble, warm and engaging, discussing his Croatian-Chilean roots and soccer career and making the time to connect with fans and sign some autographs for the youth in attendance. Unfortunately, due to having suffered an injury during the game, Toronto FC goalkeeper Luka Gavran, who was also slated to take part in the post-game meet and greet, was unable to participate.
Special thanks to members and friends of our Croatian-Canadian community who attended the event, brought their children, wore their colours proudly, shared in the festivities and helped make this event a success! Your enthusiasm, participation and continued support are what keep these traditions alive. It was great to also have the Ambassador of the Republic of Croatia (Ottawa) Vice Skračić, Consul General (Mississauga) Ante Jović and recently appointed Honourary Consul (Montréal) Isabella Komšić partake in the day’s festivities.
We also extend our sincere appreciation to MLSE, Toronto FC and everyone who helped bring this event together. The connection between our Croatian heritage and the soccer communities across Canada is something worth celebrating, and we look forward to continuing to build on this legacy for years to come.
