The Croatian Academy of America has published an anthology of Croatian Renaissance poetry, drama and prose, The Glory and Fame: Croatian Renaissance Reader −Dike ter hvaljen’ja: Hrvatska renesansna čitanka, edited by Vladimir Bubrin and Vinko Grubišić.
Entitled after Marko Marulić’s opening verse of his 1501 Judita, the 590-page book is based in part on the three preceding issues of the Journal of Croatian Studies (Volumes 45-46, 47 and 48), dedicated to the literature of the Croatian Renaissance poetry, drama and prose. It features revised translations, a new and extensive introduction, a comprehensive bibliography, biographical notes on Croatian Renaissance authors, and a glossary.
The Glory and Fame features 23 Croatian Renaissance authors and 55 works (excerpts in the case of longer works) most representative of the Croatian Renaissance, the period commonly known as the “golden age” of Croatian literature. The literary texts appear in their original old Croatian, with English translations opposite, and contemporary Croatian at the bottom. In addition to the literary quality of the works as such, the unique layout enables the reader to appreciate how the Croatian language has changed over the centuries.
The Croatian Renaissance is a unique phenomenon in the Slavic world with its intermingling of Mediterranean and authentic Croatian (Slavic) characteristics. Initially the Italian (Venetian) models prevailed, but with the period’s evolvement works belonging to the Croatian Renaissance reached as far as Urach and Tübingen in Germany at the height of the Protestant Reformation.
As original and lively as the literature of the Croatian Renaissance was, it has thus far eluded the attention of western researchers and scholars. Very few of its works have been translated into English. The objective of The Glory and Fame is to fill this void by making available to researchers and students in the English-speaking world examples of the Croatian Renaissance literature in the original and in translation. As noted by Bratislav Lučin, “This anthology will definitely serve as a textbook or valuable reference for students, and as one of the most comprehensive sources of text and information about the Croatian literary Renaissance for readers who speak little or no Croatian.”
Both Vladimir Bubrin and Vinko Grubišić, the editors, are Canadian-Croatian scholars, authors and translators from Toronto and Kitchener-Waterloo, respectively. Dr. Bubrin obtained his PHD in Slavic Studies at the University of Toronto and has published articles and reviews in Croatian as well as Canadian and American Slavic periodicals. Professor Grubišić is the first holder of the Chair for Croatian Language and Culture at the University of Waterloo. He is the author of several monographs, books of literary essays and Croatian language instruction textbooks. He is also a poet and playwright. Bubrin and Grubišić are the recipients of the Croatian Writers’ Association award “Davidias” (2012) for their translations of Croatian Renaissance poetry and drama in the Journal of Croatian Studies.
John Kraljic, President of the Croatian Academy of America, wrote the book’s Forward, and Bratislav Lučin of the Književni krug Split and the Head of Marulianum, wrote its Preface. Katia Grubisic provided editorial expertise and the cover art and design were the courtesy of the well-known Croatian-Canadian artist Anton Cetín and Boris Matas.
The Croatian Academy of America was established in 1953 and has published the Journal of Croatian Studies since 1960. The Glory and Fame is the first book published under the Academy’s auspices.
