7th Annual Croatian Heritage Night (BMO Field – Toronto)

Several hundred Croatian-Canadians were among the 30,000 fans in attendance at BMO Field on September 14th to support Toronto FC in its 2-1 victory over Austin FC and to take part in the 7th Annual Croatian Heritage Night with Toronto FC.

DJ Tommy Skara kicked off the pre-game festivities with some Croatian tunes, creating a great party atmosphere.

TFC produced commemorative t-shirts for those in attendance and a dozen or so lucky fans got to go home with some Croatian National Soccer Team jerseys thanks to a draw sponsored by the Chamber.

This year’s special guest was Luka Gavran, goalkeeper of Toronto FC. Luka joined members of the Croatian community after the game for a meet and greet. After sharing some inspirational words, the youth in attendance were particularly excited to have an opportunity to ask him some questions and partake in a photo and autograph session. It is always great to witness the success of one of our own, with Luka being born and raised in Hamilton and growing up as an active member of the local Croatian community.

This year’s event was also marked by a special recognition made to George Simcich by the Canadian Soccer Association and Toronto FC. After immigrating to Canada in the 1960s, George’s perseverance in soccer led him to nearly a decade of glory with Toronto Croatia where he helped the team secure back to back Canada Soccer cup victories in 1971 and 1972. His talent did not go unnoticed as he was chosen to play for Team Canada in the qualifiers for the 1974 FIFA World Cup held in Germany. After retiring from playing, he assumed a management role in helping Metros Toronto Croatia win the North American Soccer league championships. Even into his 70s, George could be found on the field every Sunday playing alongside his Croatia teammates, proving soccer is a source of joy, friendship and wellness.
