30 Years of a Historical Act of Donation and Renovation of the Embassy of the Republic of Croatia by the Croatian Community in Canada

In 1994, the Croatian community in Canada came together to donate to the Republic of Croatia and renovate a two-and-half storey brick residence (formerly known as the “Toller House”), located in Sandy Hill, an established neighbourhood east of Ottawa’s downtown. Built in 1875, this beautifully refurbished Gothic Revival residence situated on a large corner lot at Chapel Street and Daly Avenue today serves as the Embassy of the Republic of Croatia in Canada,

To mark the occasion of 30 years since the historic act of donation and renovation by the Croatian community in Canada (as well as the 25th anniversary of the opening of the Croatian Embassy), a special commemoration reception was held at the embassy, which was attended by diplomatic and political representatives and members of the community from across Canada, including representatives and members of the Canadian-Croatian Chamber of Commerce. The Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Croatia, H.E. Gordan Grlić Radman, made his way to Ottawa for the occasion.

The Honourable Robert Oliphant, Parliamentary Secretary to the Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs noted in his address how the donation by the Croatian community of the building to serve as the Croatian embassy shows the love our community has for its ancestral Croatian homeland and the importance it places on ensuring a strong relationship between Canada and Croatia.

Congratulations to all who contributed to this community undertaking, which serves as a reminder of the strength of our community and that together we make success!

Special thanks to the Embassy of Croatia in Canada, led by Ambassador Vice Skračić, for organizing the beautiful evening.
